Osteoarthritis is often caused by years of wear and tear or as the result of an injury. This means that there is no cure. There are, however, ways to manage the condition and to prevent it from getting any worse. So what treatments are there for osteoarthritis?
What treatments are there for osteoarthritis?
There are a few different groups of treatment options. The first is based on changing your daily routines and habits; next is pain management and supportive treatments. Surgery is also an option, but usually the last resort.
Lifestyle Changes – There are two big lifestyle changes you can make that can help to improve the pain. The first is to increase the amount of exercise you are doing. Many people cut back, but more usually is better. Building muscles and flexibility will reduce the pain. The second change to make is to lose some weight. If you are carrying extra weight, then your joints have to work harder.
Pain Management – There are lots of pain management options. Which is best for you will be a conversation to have with your doctor. Options include paracetamol, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, capsaicin cream and steroid injections
Supportive Treatments – These are complementary treatments that can help to manage the pain and improve quality of life. Options here include using a TENS machine, hot and cold packs, assistive devices and physiotherapy.
Surgery – If the damage is extensive, then there are a few options available to you that can help to decrease pain and improve flexibility. This can involve anything from tidying up the tissues in the joints to part to whole joint replacement.
